In this position you will provide legal representation and counsel to The Standard’s business lines, including group and individual insurance, retirement plans, and individual annuities. By becoming a part of the Transactions Team, you will be joining a group of strategic, proactive legal experts, who have a deep understanding of The Standard’s businesses and are committed to continuous improvement, both in terms of professional growth and in delivering outstanding legal services that help our company move forward.


  • Advise on legal issues and risks pertaining to company decisions and products, retirement plan administration, contract interpretation, and regulatory compliance.
  • Negotiate, prepare and approve legal documents, contracts and policies; research, draft and update legal manuals and training materials.
  • Develop and apply business, industry, and competitive knowledge to support The Standard’s strategic priorities.
  • Analyze and determine effect of state and federal statutes, regulations and court opinions on the company's operations and conduct; advise company personnel how the law affects the company's business activities; oversee legislation recommendations.
  • Provide legal representation, advice and counsel to advance business goals consistent with relevant state and federal law.  Provide risk analysis and risk assessment to protect the company from unintended liability.


  • Doctor of Jurisprudence & Oregon State Bar admission (in-house counsel or reciprocal admission also acceptable).  The position requires one to four (4) years of legal experience.  The position will require the attorney to support the work of an in-house corporate legal department, including researching and advising on general corporate legal matters, corporate governance issues, state and federal compliance issues, and drafting and approving legal documents and contracts.
  • Demonstrated experience with insurance, employee benefits or other relevant areas of the law highly preferred, or the equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience.
  • Clear, effective written and oral communications skills.
  • Experience evaluating complex fact situations to identify legal issues, locate applicable legal authority, analyze and understand statutes, regulations, and case law, recommend appropriate and legally defensible courses of action or alternatives.
  • Ability to interpret complex laws, regulations and court opinions governing insurance in 51 jurisdictions and federal employee benefit laws, e.g., ERISA, FMLA, ADAAA, ADEA, COBRA, HIPAA, GLBA and IRS Code. Identify legal options and strategies which are consistent with company business practices, policies and objectives.
