The Standard is seeking to expand its actuarial talent in the Retirement Plans (RP) business due to business growth and the need to rapidly respond to changing business environments. The current need is for a pricing and underwriting actuary for a new role within the RP Actuarial practice. Reporting to the Senior Director of Underwriting, this role will develop and maintain cost and profit models, analyze and interpret model results, and interact with a number of cross-divisional stakeholders to drive business decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain models for use in profit analysis of full service defined contribution and defined benefit business.
  • Provide actuarial oversight to the new business underwriting process.
  • Prepare or oversee profit analyses for blocks of business.
  • Partner with experience analysis team to identify assumptions required for pricing. Participate in experience analysis as needed to support pricing of full service business.
  • Use cost data from finance team to make recommendations regarding pricing for full service business.
  • Provide oversight for pricing software. Work with IT to ensure updates are made correctly and tested adequately.
  • Demonstrate a strong business acumen, being able to recommend pricing approaches in a highly competitive fee environment.
  • Ensure accuracy of information and output delivered, possessing sufficient knowledge and intuition to be able to independently verify results.
  • Maintain the integrity of models, ensuring they are accurate and effective in capturing material aspects of the business, and that appropriate controls are applied.
  • Build relationships and establish a high level of trust and credibility within RP Actuarial, RP Finance, RP Sales, and senior business management, by providing quality information and insight to influence decision making.
  • Provide coaching and leadership to the underwriting actuarial students.

Qualifications

  • FSA designation or demonstrated progression towards completing exams to obtain FSA designation.
  • Minimum 5 years progressively responsible actuarial experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in GGY AXIS, or an equivalent modeling platform.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently, particularly in the area of using sound independent judgment, problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Innovative, continuous improvement mindset.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate, negotiate and influence effectively.
  • Results-oriented, excellent customer focus and commitment to quality.
