    Delivery Support Services (DSS) provides The Standard with application build, automated test, and deployment services.  This includes a Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipeline across multiple technologies and is actively extending our Path to Production (P2P) capabilities into the AWS cloud.


    Intern will be working with the Delivery Support Services (DSS) Build and Release Engineering (BRE) team in support of and extending a heavily used software continuous integration / continuous deployment pipeline and environment provisioning system for Standard Insurance Company core business applications.  Technologies incorporated include Jenkins pipelines, Xebia Labs XL Deploy / XL Release, GitHub Enterprise, JetBrains Intellij IDEA, Ansible, hybrid on-site and AWS cloud datacenter, Sonotype Nexus, SonarQube, Git, Gradle, Maven, Docker, VMs, TerraForm, Packer, Consul, Jira, Confluence, and scripting in various languages including .NET, Java, Groovy, Kotlin, BASH, PowerShell and Python on both Linux and Windows.


    Intern will learn how production systems are used to build, test, deploy and support enterprise software.  And the effective use of modern development tools and methodologies used to support multiple development teams using an array of different software technologies.  It is expected that the Intern will learn specific aspects of the pipeline, learn to implement tests that validate the correct functioning of that part of the system, and provide documentation that will be used by software engineers and operations team in the ongoing use.  Based on the skills and aptitude of the candidate opportunity will be provided to extend the system to new technologies and/or optimize the performance and supportability of the existing system.  It is expected that the candidate will both participate with and learn from the direction of senior Build and Release Engineers on the team in the Portland offices, and will also have independent development projects that will reviewed by the senior engineers.  A presentation to the larger team at the end of the internship summarizing and documenting the accomplishments will be required.


    Interest in the art and engineering of software development tools and methodologies required.  Programming experience with JVM based languages using Maven or Gradle build tools required, some practical experience with Groovy and/or Kotlin desirable.  Comfort working in both Windows and Linux based development environments with basic familiarity of BASH, PowerShell and Python scripting languages required.  Web programming and or experience with any of the other tools listed in the description above desirable.
