    The mission of the Underwriting function is to foster sound underwriting and business decisions, evaluate group insurance risks, develop effective relationships and contribute toward the growth and development of the underwriting department in an effort to write and retain long term profitable business.  Underwriters are expected to progress through the levels of the job family based on classroom training; on the job exposure; developing their analytical skills; independent decision making; effective communication, and leadership skills. 

    Responsibilities

    Risk Decisions
    Apply sound, creative underwriting and business judgment in the timely analysis and evaluation of group insurance risks to contribute to the growth and profitability of the organization.
     
    Customer Service
    Develop and maintain effective working relationships with assigned field personnel, producers, assigned policyholders and Home Office personnel through professional negotiation, responsive communication, problem resolution and anticipation of customer expectations. 
     
    Mentoring and Training
    Provide mentoring and training as appropriate based on job level and experience.
     
    Projects and Special Assignments
    Actively participate in projects to contribute to corporate goals.

    Qualifications

    Associate Underwriter:

     

    Education & Experience:

    Bachelor’s degree in business and/or two years’ progressively responsible work experience with emphasis in underwriting or similar analytical capacity. 

     

     

    Knowledge & Skills:

    Perform math calculations including the use of algebraic formulas; analyze detailed written information for accuracy and completeness; express ideas clearly both in written and oral communications, strong customer service orientation, and excellent time management skills.  Demonstrated ability to make good decisions and then utilize negotiation skills to achieve overall desired result. Also, demonstrated ability to utilize customer service skills.  Aptitude for Microsoft Office Suite. 

     

    Job Complexity & Judgment:       

    Underwrite insurance risk of limited scope or routine in nature.  Applies appropriate underwriting guidelines, procedures, contract provisions, state insurance statues. Provides and analyzes data from which answers can be readily attained.  Serves as a trainer for the Rating Analysts.

     

    Independence & Supervision required

    Typically receives detailed instructions on all work.  Takes ownership of routine work and operates with little guidance after period of initial training.      

     

    Interaction & Influence:

    Contacts are typically limited to immediate supervisor, others on their team, rating analysts and sales partners.  Builds working relationships inter-departmentally.  Effective team player.  

     

     

    Underwriter:

     

    Education & Experience:

    Education - Bachelor’s degree in Business and /or progressively responsible work experience with emphasis in Employee Benefits underwriting or similar analytical capacity.

     

    Knowledge & Skills:

    Perform math calculations including the use of algebraic formulas; analyze detailed written information for accuracy and completeness; express ideas clearly both in written and oral communications, strong customer service and negotiation skills present and excellent time management skills.  Demonstrated ability to make good decisions and then utilize negotiation skills to achieve overall desired result. Also, demonstrated ability to utilize customer service skills.  Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office Suite.

     

    Job Complexity & Judgment:       

    Underwrites risk of moderate to more complex scope in the Regional Accounts.  Exercises independent judgment and discretion.  Applies appropriate underwriting guidelines, procedures, contract provisions, state insurance statues. Requires analysis of data where answers are not readily obtained.  Works within defined procedures to resolve non-standard issues.   Makes recommendations for new processes or procedures.  Acts as trainer and mentor for Associate Underwriters.

     

    Independence & Supervision required:       

    Generally works independently with general instructions on most routine work.  May require detailed instructions on new assignments. Work is often shared with team.

     

    Interaction & Influence

    Contacts include own department, interactions with field partners, Benefits, Marketing, Compliance, and occasional other external contacts to provide or obtain information.  Effective team player and approver / mentor for lesser experienced personnel.

     

     

    Senior Underwriter

     

    Education & Experience:

    Education - Bachelor’s degree in Business and /or progressively responsible work experience in Employee Benefits underwriting.

         

    Knowledge & Skills:       

    Perform math calculations including the use of algebraic formulas; analyze detailed written information for accuracy and completeness; express ideas clearly both in written and oral communications, strong customer service skills and excellent time management skills present.  Demonstrated ability to make good decisions and then utilize negotiation skills to achieve overall desired result. Also, demonstrated ability to utilize customer service skills.  Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office Suite.  Strong demonstrated capability to mentor and provide both classroom and one-on-one training as needed.  Aptitude to identify training gaps and needs of trainees.

     

    Job Complexity & Judgment:

    Underwrites and evaluations risk up to the most complex Regional Account cases.  Exercises independent judgment and discretion.  Applies appropriate underwriting guidelines, procedures, contract provisions, state insurance statues. Requires analysis and evaluation of multiple factors to resolve complex issues.  Makes recommendations for new processes or procedures.

         

    Independence & Supervision required:       

    Typically plans and schedules own work and requires limited direction.  Capable of seeing the "big picture" and the downstream impacts of their work. 

     

    Interaction & Influence:       

    Contacts are typically company wide and are frequently outside the company to provide or obtain information.  May consult with management.  Networks with internal and external peers. Able to influence decisions.  Effective mentor and team player.
