    IT at The Standard

When you work at The Standard, you are part of a company that provides customers financial well-being and peace of mind. As a member of our IT (scum) team, you work side by side with the business, directly with users and will be embedded on the same floor with our Product Owner,  Finance and Accounting division pursuing strategic opportunities for our company.   It’s an exciting time of renewed focus to modernize, build and deliver to our internal services division that is driving new investments in technology.     At The Standard, we are large enough for big opportunities and small enough for big impact.

    What We Are Looking For

We are looking for an experienced full stack engineer with tech lead experience particularly in integration technologies to join our IT Finance and Technology Solutions team.  Recent acquisition drives modernization of our legacy financial systems technology; exploration into expanding and scaling capabilities (multi-basis, IFRS), automation and data transparency.  You will be providing your expertise and critical thinking to help evolve Financial Services technology to meet these demands.  We are looking for individuals who can bring new ideas to deliver agile solutions to our enterprise financial services division.   Could this be you?  If so apply today!

    The Role

This brings engineering discipline and best practices to investigating, architecting, designing and implementing new solutions and/or adding new features and functions to existing solutions, which meet Standard Insurance’s finance and accounting business needs.

Investigation:  Investigation starts with understanding the business problem to be solved.  This role will lead or participate in requirements gathering that will feed an iterative based methodology.  Packaged Software and SaaS products are commonly identified, and utilized, within Standard and are integrated with by new and existing solutions.  Software Engineers are expected to be proficient installing and integrating these components.

Architect and Design:  Designing solutions using an iterative, test driven methodology is the expectation.  Software Engineers will write their own unit tests and perform the validation using contemporary tools, moving us towards continuous development/continuous integration.  Production ready code is the target for all Software Engineers in this family.  Data needs will be gathered, designed, implemented and tested by the Software Engineer using Oracle, Microsoft, or other data repositories.  More complex data designs will be overseen by a specific Data Engineer.  User Interface or User Experience design is the responsibility of the Software Engineer and should use a responsive design framework.  Designs and code are peer reviewed with other Software Engineers or architectural governing bodies, depending on their complexity.  Proto-typing is expected when introducing new approaches or techniques.  Development in multiple modern languages is required with good proficiency.  All architecture and design is expected to adhere to good enterprise level application security best practices.

Implement:  Software Engineers are expected to build and automate the deployment of their components/solutions into production.  Knowledge or proficiency in the current industry toolset for this purpose is required.

    • Provide technical leadership to enterprise initiatives that span varying current or new technologies
    • Lead or participate in architecture, implementation and design reviews
    • Organize and lead working groups to establish solution options across varying current or new technologies
    • Research, troubleshoot and resolve problems related to vendor platform software, the applications that run on them and the systems that they interact with
    • Stay current on ETL (data movement) trends and quickly pick up new technologies and approaches and their relevance to providing business value
    • Quickly prove out technologies and approaches to solve business problems
    • Create documentation of the implemented solution to facilitate knowledge transfer and ongoing operational support.
    • Prioritize and manage multiple work efforts, driving project success and delivering to customer expectations.
    • Participate in the engineering community to identify new technologies, methods, standards.

Software Engineers have to possess and demonstrate systems and critical thinking and leverage that in a collaborative team-based environment.  The ability to play varying roles comfortably is required.
