    The mission of the Underwriting function is to foster sound underwriting and business decisions, develop effective relationships and contribute toward the growth and development of the underwriting department in an effort to write and retain long term profitable business. 


    We are specifically seeking candidates with large case underwriting experience (1,000+ lives).


    Underwriters are expected to progress through the levels of the job family based on classroom training; on the job exposure; developing their analytical skills; independent decision making; effective communication, and leadership skills.


    Risk Decisions
    Apply sound, creative underwriting and business judgment in the timely analysis and evaluation of insurance risks to contribute to the growth and profitability of the organization.
    Customer Service
    Develop and maintain effective working relationships with assigned field personnel, producers, assigned policyholders and Home Office personnel through professional negotiation, responsive communication, problem resolution and anticipation of customer expectations. 
    Mentoring and Training
    Provide mentoring and training as appropriate based on job level and experience.
    Projects and Special Assignments
    Actively participate in projects to contribute to corporate goals.


    Education & Experience:      

    Education - Bachelor’s degree in Business and /or progressively responsible work experience in Employee Benefits underwriting.  National account-level underwriting experience required.


    Knowledge & Skills

    Perform math calculations including the use of algebraic formulas; analyze detailed written information for accuracy and completeness; express ideas clearly both in written and oral communications, strong customer service and excellent time management skills. Demonstrated ability to make good decisions and then utilize negotiation skills to achieve overall desired result. Also, demonstrated ability to utilize customer service skills.   Advanced experience with Microsoft Office Suite.  Strong demonstrated capability to mentor and provide both classroom and one-on-one training as needed.  Aptitude to identify training gaps and needs of trainees.


    Job Complexity & Judgment:       

    Underwrites a moderate level of risk, complexity and premium in the National Accounts market.  Applies appropriate underwriting guidelines, procedures, contract provisions, state insurance statues.  Exercises independent judgment and uses creative strategic thinking to drive solutions which requires an evaluation of impact to all company departments.  Evaluates potential tangible and intangible results of underwriting.   Makes decisions on recommendations for new processes or procedures. Requires a high degree of innovation and ingenuity.  Is a leader or mentor for Regional Account Underwriters.


    Independence & Supervision required:       

    Anticipates and forecasts future economic or financial changes that may impact the assigned block of business.  Plans for and implements long term solutions to increase our ability to improve and retain profitable customers.  Consultative direction and review by management is performed on a frequent basis.  


    Interaction & Influence:

    Serves as a primary contact and internal consultant to management and external contacts.  Coordinates alternative risk ideas across other departments.  Significant role as resource/mentor to others in the underwriting family.  Viewed as a resource to the division and provides leadership in their key areas of responsibilities.  Strives to exceed customer needs.  Thinks innovatively, brings ideas to life, and seeks continuous improvement.  Looked upon as a role model by other underwriters and departments.
