  • Overview

If you want to make a positive difference and stand out from the crowd, you’ll fit in at The Standard (www.standard.com). Through our retirement plans and insurance products and services, we help people achieve financial well-being and peace of mind. Come join us and share our passion for serving our customers in a positively different way.

The Standard is looking for a passionate and driven individual with serious leadership chops to be a Director of Engineering of two Portland-based teams focused on the platforms and enterprise capabilities of a complex business.

    Responsibilities

    The Opportunity

These teams are responsible for transforming the enterprise platforms and capabilities that support our various businesses with new tech stacks and tools.  A move to open source and cloud platforms with things like Angular and microservices, mixed with a good helping of DevOps to modernize our automation, tooling, and build pipelines is our engineering focus.  Developing technology roadmaps and platform strategies is our guidepost focus, giving direction to many of the other engineering teams at The Standard.  These are big objectives, and we’re looking for somebody who is up for a challenge.

    What You’ll Do

    • Provide leadership to a talented group of engineers and analysts as we re-define our technology platforms to build a better experience for our customers.
    • Work directly with leaders and executives across the business to help illustrate the vision of where we take our tech.
    • Work with new tools, technologies, and infrastructure to deliver new software products to our customers and modernize our existing operational platforms.
    • Build relationships – These teams work with many other engineering and infrastructure teams, outside partners and vendors, and of course our various lines of business. You’ll need to forge strong partnerships with the other groups to help move us forward.
    • Drive organizational change as we move to a lean software product development model that is fast-paced and continuously delivers value to our customers.

    Qualifications

    Who We Want

We’re after a respected leader who can speak in the language of the business and translate effectively to highly technical teams.  If you’re a good candidate, you will have:

    • Strong leadership skills such as mentoring, coaching, and collaboration that can be a resource an entire technical team can look up to, who is also willing to learn too.
    • Amazing critical thinking skills with the ability to take abstract concepts and ideas, distill them down, and make them real. You want to understand not only why something needs to be done, but how you can help your teams get there.
    • A keen sense for problem solving - sniffing out issues and bugs during development and having a clear view of cause-and-effect so that you can prioritize effectively for your teams.
    • Excellent communication skills with the ability to switch contexts between highly technical and business-focused topics quickly and easily.
    • Plenty of prior battle scars. We’re looking for somebody with experience (5+ years in a leadership role, 10+ professionally breathing software) that has learned, sometimes the hard way, how to be a fantastic leader.
    • An individual who has learned how to learn. You have an undergrad degree in engineering or comp sci or have a combination of other education and equivalent work.
    • Lots of experience working in highly-iterative development processes. You understand the principles of them, but aren’t married to any particular methodology.
    • Somebody prepared to deal with the boring and the tough. Every minute of every day in a leadership role isn’t always watching teams sling shiny new code.  A leader in this role must also be willing and able to take on things like vendor SOWs, performance management, and the other things that come up day-to-day.

    Who We Really Want

If you can check all the boxes above and still want to stand out from the crowd, our ideal candidate will also have:

    • Someone that has walked-the-walk and has a strong technical background that can help mentor software engineering-focused teams.
    • Experience with modern Java and lightweight/container-less architectures, all delivered through modern distributed source control, dependency management, and build pipelines.
    • Significant technical experience in complex systems integration. You’ve not only drawn the lines on a Visio diagram, you’ve built the software that embodies them.
    • An individual that is plugged in to the Portland tech community. You’ve been to the meetups and participate in one or more of the many professional technology groups in the area.
    • A portfolio of successful high-risk, high-visibility projects. You’ve driven big initiatives over the line while meeting tight commitments to do so.
    • A good “credit history” of paying down technical debt. Modernizing platforms isn’t easy, and you’ve shown you know how to do it.
    • A firm understanding of the Lean principles of product development. One-piece flow, visual management, context switching, and simplification have become a way-of-life for you.
