    The Employee Benefits Specialist role is a training position which is the first step in educating newly hired sales professionals about the expectations and responsibilities of a sales professional at The Standard.  This role is a short-term training position for field sales roles, starting the multi-year progression to become a fully qualified Group Benefits Sales Professional.  The individuals in this role are embedded within a working sales team and a territory actively partnering with experienced sales professionals.  The rotational training program offers the ideal mix of opportunities, from well-established mature business relationships with area producers to robust market development opportunities.  This range of experiences provides the “rookie” an environment in which to learn the sales strategies and sales skills necessary to achieve personal sales goals when assigned to a personal sales territory, and a basis to establish productive and long term working relationships with managers, peers, partners and brokers.


    • Learn and practice skills to develop and manage a large, dynamic territory, which includes a full range of business, from long established producers to significant growth opportunities.
    • Learn and practice skills to serve as the key liaison between producers, customers and the company to drive sales goals and personal success.
    • Learn and practice skills to effectively utilize the full range of resources we provide to ensure quota attainment, including a full, locally based service team, home office service groups, marketing and development resources, expertise of peers, managers, etc.
    • Develop product knowledge, sales skills, and competitive intelligence via both personal experiences and mentored sales calls as well as via formal development plans/training sessions. Begin to utilize skills gained to compete effectively in the local market, building on a basis of product and market knowledge that will allow the individual to move into different markets and product categories – quickly modifying sales and market techniques based on the customer and market conditions.
    • Develop skills and seek out opportunities to be mentored by others, improve sales office and service team performance. Seek opportunities to gain experience, improve sales practices, share knowledge between peer rookies and others in the sales team, and enhance the success of the local, regional and national sales team.


    Education: Bachelor’s degree required, with emphasis on Business, Marketing, Finance or equivalent desired. Consideration is given to all majors.


    Skills: Solid prospecting skills; knowledge of territory management methodology, sales process, proposal preparation and presentation skills. Must have a passion for sales. Commensurate PC skills needed e.g. Microsoft Office, Sales management tools.


    Other requirements: must have excellent driving record and must be insurable under corporate insurance carrier.


    Professional certification required: None.


    Physical Demands: Ability to travel within the assigned territory
