The mission of the Underwriting function is to write and retain long term profitable business by fostering sound underwriting and business decisions; developing effective relationships; and contributing towards the growth and development of the underwriting department.
Associate Underwriters take part in an extensive training period where your underwriting skills are developed and strengthened. Combined with your curiosity, motivation, and initiative, the Associate Underwriting role is an excellent starting place to establish an underwriting career at The Standard.
Underwriters progress through the job family based on classroom training and on the job exposure, and by developing their analytical, independent decision making, and effective communication skills. Successful Associate Underwriters can progress through Regional Underwriter, Senior Underwriter, Lead Underwriter, and National Underwriter positions.

Apply sound, creative underwriting and business judgment in the timely analysis and evaluation of insurance risks to contribute to the growth and profitability of the organization.
Develop and maintain effective working relationships with assigned field personnel, producers, assigned policyholders and Home Office personnel through professional negotiation, responsive communication, problem resolution and anticipation of customer expectations.
Mentoring and Training
In the Associate Underwriting role, you will actively participate in mentoring and training activities. The learning curve can take up to 18 months or more. Associate Underwriters are given progressively more responsibility after critical skills are demonstrated.
Projects and Special Assignments
Actively participate in projects to contribute to corporate goals as needed. Active participation in Lean activities is also required.
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in business and/or two years’ progressively responsible work experience with emphasis in underwriting or similar analytical capacity. Experience in Life & Disability underwriting is strongly preferred.
Knowledge & Skills
Job Complexity & Judgment
Underwrite insurance risk of limited scope or routine in nature. Applies appropriate underwriting guidelines, procedures, contract provisions, state insurance statues. Provides and analyzes data from which answers can be readily attained. Serves as a trainer for the Rating Analysts.
Independence & Supervision required
Typically receives detailed instructions on all work. Takes ownership of routine work and operates with little guidance after period of initial training. Increasing responsibility for doing renewals, proposals, and approvals is given as skills progress.
Interaction & Influence
Contacts are typically limited to immediate supervisor, peers, Rating Analysts, and sales partners. Builds effective inter-departmental relationships.
